Mrs. Mercedes Calles Martín Pedrilla (Cáceres, 1915 - Madrid, 2001), who is th patron of arts of Caceres, set up the Foundation which bears her name as well as her husband's, Mr. Carlos Ballestero Sierra. She wanted to donate most of her property to the city where she was born. Throughout her life she contributed ananymously to works of charity, helping those most in need and for many years she had the intention of creating a foundation which would contribute to the integral development of Caceres and Extremadura. She worked with enthusiasm and used her inheritance in order to carry out her great dream: the prosperity of the people or Caceres through culture, understanding, training, knowledge of themselves and of the world.

The origin of this building dates back to the 15th century and is the prototype of a fortified mansion, the model of civil architecture in Caceres built at the end of the Middle Ages whose architecture and technical uniqueness characterizes the historical part of Caceres.

From the very beginning the Foundation's priority eas to untertake, by its own means, the restoration and rehabilitation of the building to be used by this Foundation, while absolutely respecting its original construction and rejecting any modification which absolutely respecting its original and rejecting any modification which might affect its appearance or its facade.

The restoration and subsequent use of this outstanding building is one of the most important aims of the Foundation: the protection, improvement, preservation and the national and international promotion of the city of Caceres.

He building consists of three storeys with an area of nearly 1.000 square metres. The ground floor is designed for a permanent exhibition with a selection of collections of furniture, paintings, glass and antiques donated by Mrs. Mercedes Calles. The two upper floors have mult-purpose uses such as exhibitions, meetings, conferencies, training courses and lectures...
